11 October 2007 - Stand by Me by Rob Reiner (1986)

Stand by Me (based on The Body by Stephen King)

4 young friends set out on an adventure.
Geordie (Will Wheaton - Star Trek Next Generation), Chris (River Phoenix - Indiana Jones 3, My Own Private Idaho), Teddy (Corey Feldman- The Goonies, Gremlins) and Vern (Jerry O'Connell - Scream 2, Sliders) go and look for the missing body of a local teenager - found by a gang of older boys. A story of boys hangin' out and growin' up.

This is a story of friendship, a story to remind all of us what it felt to be 12 and who discover life is quick, sometimes merciless, and magical. This is a perfect little film.

27 September 2007 - The Wings of Honneamise by Hiroyuki Yamaga (1987)

Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honneamise
王立宇宙軍オネアミセの翼

Imagine living the fantastic Space Conquest right next to the protagonists, wouldn't that be a drean coming true ?

Well, not here !

As a matter of fact, in the world of "The Wings of Honneamise", the space conquest is not a priority. Nevertheless, Lhadatt and his crew will try to accomplish just that. We follow the life of Lhadatt in this adventure he was not prepared to live.

This 1987 movie by Gainax (Evangelion, Gunbuster) is the first movie of the studio and tells the fascinating story of the space conquest in a world that doesn't really care about it.
Moreover, the world depicted here has been coherently and entirely created for the movie. The history, the politics, the geography, the economics, everything has been thought over and we can feel it on the background of the story.

August 16, 2007 - Hana-bi (1997) by Takeshi Kitano

Hana-bi (1997)

Writing about a Kitano movie, that's a tough one !

The story of a cop who quits his job after an accident.
Technically, this sums up the movie but there's SO much more in the movie than the story.

As stated in the Wikipedia article, the "deadpan demeanor, the stillness, the languid pace, the lengthy takes, the sudden ruthless violence, and the overall minimalism" are here mastered by Kitano and Joe Hisaishi's music really highlights the emotions throughout the movie.

The degree of Kitano's own involvment in this movie also adds to its uniqueness. Besides the "usual" roles of director and actor, he also edited the movie, wrote the screenplay and painted the paintings that appear in it.

This is one of the best Kitano movies and the 21 awards (including Venice's Festival's Golden Lion) won't contradict this statement !

09/08/2007 - Zivot je cudo (2004) - Kusturica!

Hello supermovix fans!!!
This week we are happy to finally present a Kusturica's movie!!!
Zivot je cudo (life is a miracle) is a story of trains, bears, football, opera, war, love, gypsy music and cats... mixed all together to obtain the typical Kusturica's extravagant magical realism with spicy humour.
A little important thing: the movie is 2h30 long, we will start at 8pm sharp.

see you there, room 220, east building, you know...

26 July 2007 - "Gedo Senki - Tales from Earthsea" by Goro MIYAZAKI

ATTENTION: We might start little later due to the famous "Wako-shi fireworks display" that we can watch from surroundings of the east building.

The movie's title is "Gedo Senki - Tales from Earthsea", director is Goro MIYAZAKI, the son of famous Hiyao MIYAZAKI ("Spirited Away", "Howl's Moving Castle" etc.). The story itself is loosely based on Ursula K. Le Guin's "Earthsea" saga.

19 july 2007 - La cite de la Peur (1994)

By popular demand of some more comical and lighter movie, this time

we go all the way to satisfy our beloved audience. And maybe even a
little bit too far !
But let's begin with the plot. At the Cannes Festival, a serial killer
is loose and copying the murders seen in one of the movies in
competition.
Is it an awful scheme to make some publicity or just a coincidence ?

You'll know if you come and watch the movie.
It was made in 1994 by a French comic troupe called Les Nuls who were
quite famous in France at the time. One of the member, Alain Chabat
has also, since then, directed several movies like Asterix : Mission
Cleopatre and participated in movies with Victoria Abril or under the
direction of Michel Gondry.
And now, about the movie humour.
If I had to make a comparison, I would say it looks like Austin Powers
but with a kind of silly French touch. This movie is voluntarily
stupid, sometimes below the belt and DEFINITELY not to be taken
seriously.

05 July 2007 - Survive Style 5+ (2004)

A few words from Mauro, our correspondent in Japan:

After quite a long time, a Japanese movie for our cineforum:

Survive Style 5+ ... a very peculiar title for a unique movie!
First and (by now) only normal-length movie directed by Gen Sekiguchi
(more active in the making of short-films), starring the best actors
of Japanese "underground" scene, including my favourite Asano
Tadanobu (the "bad young guy" in Zatoichi and the uncle in that
wonderful piece of art called "Cha no aji - the taste of tea"),
Hiroshi Abe, Vinnie Jones, and last but not least the beautiful and
fascinating Haruka Hashimoto.

As it happens for many "debuts", Gen Sekiguchi's SS5+ is a never-
ending well full of fresh ideas born from the mind of a naive genius,
and filmed with excellent photographic taste... the fans of Jeunet
won't be disappointed!

You will get to know the interconnected lives of the 5 main
characters, who struggle to survive in nowadays' Tokyo and its
dreamlike (un)reality...
I might say, somehow near to Kurosawa's "Yume - Dreams" and Kitano's
"Dolls", including the Kieslowskian taste for interconnected plots,
dressed with a lot of action, humor, and good music!

We will watch the movie in original language (very good to practice
your Japanese!) and English subtitles.

21 June 2007 - Mahābhārata (1989)

This week, we have the pleasure to announce a movie proposed by our correspondent in India, super Elena. She writes:

The Mahābhārata, ”the great tale of the Bharata Dynasty”, is a 1989 film version of the Hindu epic, directed by Peter Brook. Brook's original 1985 stage play was 9 hours long, and toured around the world for four years. It lasted all the night, beginning at the sunset, and finishing at dawn. In 1989, it was reduced to under 6 hours for television (TV mini series). Later it was also reduced to about 3 hours for theatrical and DVD release. The screenplay was the result of eight years work by Peter Brook, Jean-Claude Carrière and Marie-Hélène Estienne. For the casting an international selection of actors was intentionally chosen, to show that the nature of the Hindu epic is the story of all humanity.
In general terms, the story involves epic incidents between two warring families, the Pandavas (representing the good side) and the Kauravas (representing the bad side). Both sides, being the offspring of kings and gods, fight for dominion. They have been both advised by the god Krishna to live in harmony and abstain from the bloody lust for power. Yet their fights come to threaten the very order of the Universe. The plot is framed as a narrative between the Brahmin sage Vyasa and the Hindu deity Ganesha, and directed towards an unnamed Indian boy who comes to him inquiring about the story of the human race. In The Mahabharata the discussion of human goals (artha or wealth, kama or pleasure, dharma or duty/harmony, and moksha or liberation) takes place within a long-standing mythological tradition, attempting to explain the relationship of the individual to society and the world (the nature of the 'Self') and the workings of karma.
Peter Brooke is one of the most important contemporary european theater director.
In the cast, the great italian actor Vittorio Mezzogiorno plays the role of the main character, Arjuna.

14 June 2007 - Waking Life (2001)

Let's continue dreaming on our big screen...

Since dreams.... what actually they are?
An escape from reality or reality itself?
Waking Life is a really cool animation made from a usual movie shot first with a DV camera and actors using a technique called "rotoscoping" first invented in 1920s.

Bring your snacks, good mood and let's have fun as usual!

07 June 2007 - David Lynch's Mulholland Drive (2001)

Mulholland drive… a David Lynch’s “psychological thriller”…

Surreal
and dreamlike images make it difficult to discern between dream and reality…

Here are some (optional) clues that might help to know what it is going on:
  1. Pay particular attention in the beginning of the film: at least two clues are revealed before the credits.
  2. Notice the appearances of the red lampshade.
  3. Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again?
  4. An accident is a terrible event... notice the location of the accident.
  5. Who gives a key, and why?
  6. Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup.
  7. What is felt, realized and gathered at the club Silencio?
  8. Did talent alone help Camilla?
  9. Note the occurrences surrounding the man behind Winkies.
  10. Where is Aunt Ruth?

31 May 2007 - Zatôichi (Takeshi Kitano, 2003)

"Zatoichi is a blind nomad who makes his living as a gambler and masseur in 19th century.
Behind this humble facade, he is actually a master swordsman gifted with a lightning-fast draw and breathtaking precision."

24 May 2007 - Jakubisko's Sedim na konari a je mi dobre (1989)

Sedim na konari a je mi dobre means “Sitting on a branch and enjoying myself”. Why would anyone sit on a tree and just enjoy?...

In this special movie, Juraj Jakubisko offers a view of post WWII Czechoslovakia, on the hopes of rebuilding the country under the wings of socialism/communism. However, the initial optimism of the idea “everything will belong to everyone” turns into complete disappointment…

Interestingly, the same disappointment happened some years later (after 1989) when MTV, Coca Cola and McDonalds were presented as the bright future for the new “Czechoslovakia”…

Viva la allegoria!
In his movies, Juraj Jakubisko (voted as the most significant Slovak filmmaker) manages to catch the life's most beautiful colours, unhide the poetry behind the ordinary and be ahead of his time...
With its mix of humour, romance and tragedy, the style of “Sedim na konari a je mi dobre” somehow reminds the one of Kusturica.
Whatever whatever whatever…
what can one expect from a movie from Eastern Europe made in 1989 if not to be exciting?…

17 May 2007 - Kieslowski's "Rouge" (1994)

In the 3rd part of the trilogy, “Rouge” (=red), there is a variety of interpersonal connections between the characters transmitting the film's theme: fraternity (humanity and respect for every living being).
Red is one of the strongest colours that exists. It represents love, anger and passion. As in the previous two films, the red colour is present throughout the whole movie (advertising banner, car…).
In “Rouge”, Kieslowski uses numerous techniques to communicated moods and ideas to finally express the aim and common unifying theme of the entire trilogy, which one could consider to be love.
This is the last of the three movies, and for that, it holds the end of the trilogy. The last scene may therefore answer some questions…

10 May 2007 - Kieslowski's "Blanc" (1994)

You missed us, eh! :D

After a “golden week” pause, the magic wall in room 220 is pleased to continue the projection of Kieslowski’s Three Colours trilogy with the second movie: “Blanc” or “Biały” (white).
“White” illustrates the second theme of the trilogy: equality.
As with “Bleu” and “Rouge”, “White” contains numerous images that at first appear unconnected but are actually flashbacks or flash-forwards to the other films in the trilogy.
There is frequent use of its title colour, too. This transmits a white mood, alternately hopeful (clarity, innocence…) and cold (snow, stone, the pigeon droppings that rain on Karol early in the film…).
For the music, this time Preisner will capture us under a white embrace…
You’ll have to judge the rest on Thursday… Kieslowski has always a surprise for you…

See you there,

Joyce & Tomekx!

26 april 2007 - Kieslowski's "Bleu" (1993)

Tadaaaaaaa… tadaaaaa…

Yes, we know… you were waiting for this moment very loooong…
But, after this long wait, master Kieslowski will finally fill the projector wall with his excellent art.

After a difficult choice, the film “Bleu” (blue in English :D ) was elected. “Bleu” is the first film of the famous trilogy (“Bleu, Blanc, Rouge”), three independent movies that are actually not so independent since the characters are coincidently linked to each other in a Kieslowskian way.

According to Kieslowski, the subject of the film is Liberty, specifically emotional Liberty.
How can a filmmaker express the feelings for someone who won't, or can't, express them herself? In Bleu, the genius Kieslowski takes us brilliantly inside the head of the deliberately impenetrable Julie.

Like the other films in the trilogy, “Bleu” makes frequent visual allusions to its title: numerous scenes are shot with blue filters or blue lighting, and many objects are blue.

And we can’t forget the music… floating through the movie, a strong blue melody with the power to engage your mind, will challenge your senses…

Try it!
After all, he is our favorite director,

19 april 2007 - Chaplin's Modern Times (1936)

Shall we invite some machines, capitalism, mental hospital, communism, police, jail, strike, poverty, and a lot of satire… to our movie evening?

This Thursday… let’s watch something new, let’s watch Charlie Chaplin in action!

Charlie Chaplin’s "Modern Times" (1936) depicts the dehumanizing effect of mechanization in the poor industrial society. It is considered a silent film although it does contain some talk from inanimate objects such as a radio or a TV. It is also the first movie where Chaplin's voice is heard (in some nonsense song, tralala).
